Thank you for your interest in the ASHP-accredited PGY2 critical care pharmacy residency program at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

As a pharmacy resident at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, you will be a member of a department that prioritizes patient care. Our dedicated staff has an excellent rapport with physician, nursing, and other interdisciplinary team members and is highly committed to providing quality, evidence-based medication-related care for our patients.

Our unique size and organizational structure make Methodist Dallas an ideal learning environment for pharmacy residents. Our 595 bed community teaching hospital offers specialized critical care services in five adult ICUs (medicine, surgery/trauma, burn, cardiovascular, and neurology) and provides comprehensive emergency services as a Level I Trauma center. Our residents are also given ample teaching opportunities through our affiliations with several colleges of pharmacy and our own PGY1 residency program.

Purpose

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.


The PGY2 critical care residency program at Methodist Dallas Medical Center produces graduates capable of practicing as clinical specialists in multiple areas of adult critical care. With required rotations in our diverse ICUs and our program structure, graduates will possess the ability to collaborate with other healthcare providers and hospital leadership to optimize safe and effective drug therapy.

General Information

The PGY2 critical care residency is a 12-month, clinical rotation-based program. Resident rotation responsibilities include:

  • Actively participating on daily interdisciplinary rounds
  • Providing evidence-based drug therapy recommendations
  • Monitoring and adjusting drug therapy including pharmacokinetic and parenteral nutrition consults
  • Educating the interdisciplinary team on drug therapy

Other responsibilities include:

  • Presentation of 2 Grand Rounds to physician groups
  • Completion of a medication use evaluation
  • Completion of a drug monograph/class review completion of  a major research project that will be presented at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting 
  • Presentation of journal club and patient case discussions

Precepting a P4 pharmacy student Residents are also expected to be involved with interdisciplinary hospital committees including P&T, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and various committees related to the care of trauma and critically ill patients. There is an opportunity to attain a teaching certificate through the University of North Texas College of Pharmacy if not attained during PGY1 training. As a pharmacy resident, in addition to rotation responsibilities, you are afforded the opportunity to be a member of the hospital pharmacy staff and serve as a pharmacist in the department.

Application Process

In order to be considered for the PGY2 Critical Care Residency program at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, you must complete each of the following steps:

  1. Register for the ASHP Resident Matching Program
  2. Submit the following via the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS):
    • Current curriculum vitae
    • Letter of intent
    • Three references (using the PhORCAS reference template)
    • Note: College of Pharmacy transcripts are not required

Requirements for Acceptance

  • Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy
  • Graduation from an ASHP-accredited PGY1 program
  • Full eligibility for Texas licensure
  • Eligibility for employment by Methodist Dallas Medical Center
  • Participation in the residency matching program
  • On-site interview (virtual interviews will be offered on a case-by-case basis)
